It leaves the Black Cats fifth in League One ahead of their weekend clash with Crewe Alexandra.

In their first meeting since 2005, Sunderland beat Crewe back in October by a goal to nil.

Crewe are 11th in the table, while Lee Johnson's side sit fifth.

While the playoffs are the minimum, automatic promotion is just seven points away for the Black Cats.
