LAST GASP: Cardiff lose out to promotion chasing Watford
Mick McCarthy’s unbeaten start to life as Cardiff City boss is over following a last-gasp defeat against Watford.
Adam Masina’s stoppage time free kick saw the Hornets claim all three points in a huge game at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The Bluebirds went in front after Josh Murphy’s cross was diverted in to his own goal by Watford defender Francisco Sierralta.
The away side were soon level though thanks to a superb goal from Nathaniel Chalobah whose silky footwork saw him find some space and slot the ball home.
With the game ebbing away, Masina’s well hit free kick couldn’t be kept out by Dillon Phillips and Cardiff’s play-off hopes took a huge blow.
Speaking post-match, Mick McCarthy believed his team did not deserve to come away from the game with nothing:
"Very cruel and tough for the lads having worked so hard to keep a good team at bay for a good while.
"Then just at the very end they get the free-kick and poor old Dillon's wondering how it happened.
"Dillon's saying he should have saved it. if he's saying that then I'm not going to disagree with him, but he did hit it well.
"Having taken the lead, I was disappointed we conceded so soon afterwards. They were probably better than us on the day but I thought we restricted them to very few chances so to lose it at the end is bitterly disappointing."
