Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes have announced they have split up.

In a post shared by both entertainers on Instagram, the pair said they had called a halt to their romantic relationship but would remain “best friends”.

Cabello and Mendes, or Shawnmila as they were known, had previously had been friends for several years and combined in 2017 for the single I Know What You Did Last Summer.

They confirmed their transition into coupledom in 2019, with Treat You Better singer Mendes joking Cabello – best known for her hit Havana – had resisted his advances up until then.

The pair’s statement said: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.

“We started out relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.

“We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

Singers Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are giving it a go. The pair, who became an item in 2019, have announced on Instagram that they’ve split – but still love each other as friends.

Cabello, 24, and Mendes, 23, said in their statement: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”

So, can you be friends with an ex? Relationships are not one-size-fits-all and what works for one may not work for another. It’s important to think about what feels good and healthy for you – after all, living by other people’s opinions is not usually a route to happiness. But if you are pondering whether it’s a good idea to be friends with an ex, there might be a few things you want to ask yourself.

Why do you want to stay friends?

“I would say initially, it’s all about why you want to be friends with your ex,” says Tina Wilson, relationship expert and founder of Wingman (tinawilson.co). “If you were friends before and it developed into a relationship, then potentially yes, if you communicate and you’re both in it for the right reasons, because you want to save a friendship.”

Some break-ups happen amicably as a mutual decision – and you realise, really, you’ve been more like friends for a while. That might make transitioning to ‘just friends’ much easier. But generally speaking, Wilson thinks it’s a good idea to have a bit of a ‘cooling off’ period, to give both of you a chance to process the break-up and figure out how you really feel.
